Obituary for Victor M. Ruiz

Victor Modesto Ruiz, of Long Branch, passed away on Friday, July 27, 2018, with his family by his side. Born on Nov. 9, 1930 in Amarillas, Cuba, Victor was the son of Jesus and Edelmira Ruiz.

The youngest of six brothers, Victor studied at La Progressiva, in Cardenas, Cuba, and La Universidad de La Habana. Along the line he became a notorious heartbreaker until he fell in love with Rosaura Sotolongo, the daughter of a prominent judge in his hometown. This courtship did not seem like a good idea to anyone and yet after Rose’s college graduation they made official what was to be a sixty-four year romance.

With their young family, in 1965, they fled the Cuban revolution and began a new life in America. Grateful for the opportunity, Victor and Rose settled in Long Branch to work hard and raise their three children. He tirelessly attended track meets, ballet recitals, spelling bees and spent so much time at his son’s dojo and competitions that he was awarded the BKG Role of Honor.

They became parishioners at Star of the Sea Church fifty-three years ago, where Victor who had a deep, abiding faith, served joyfully as an usher.

In the late 60's, he began his career with Hecon Corp. where he was a successful credit manager, but preferred to brag about his considerable prowess on the Hecon softball team. He retired from Hecon years ago but kept friendships to his last days with his work and softball cronies.

He took fashion cues from no one. His signature look was all his: a t-shirt from the fashion house of Fruit of the Loom, khakis, boat shoes (with socks!) and the ever present wool tweed flat cap.

A fierce defender of all things flora and fauna, Victor fought the good fight against the deer and worked to outsmart the groundhogs on behalf of his vegetable garden, finally acquiescing by just planting twice as much. He freely bragged about his beans, tomatoes and peppers, but honestly, no one grew more beautiful roses. A member of New Jersey’s Audubon Society Victor was a bird watcher, highly skilled at spotting, and identifying birds and could tell you what was in the trees just by hearing their birdsong.

He loved to fish, garden and had mad cooking skills, well known to the lucky recipients of his cakes, flan, and Key Lime pies. He has unfortunately gone to the grave with his true, accurate recipe for Arroz con Pollo. He was most at home in his Man Cave where he would retire to enjoy his books, classical music, the opera, and anything on the BBC or PBS.

Victor is leaving behind his beloved Yankees, who he hopes will actually overcome the despised Red Sox this season and forever more.

He is survived, but not forgotten by his son, Julio J. (Cindy) Ruiz of Dahlonega, GA; her daughter, Maria (Andrea) Ruiz-Hays of Orlando, FL and his son, Victor T. (Lisa Marie) Ruiz of Tinton Falls.

He is watching over the grandchildren and great grandchildren whom he thoroughly loved, Ashley Hingston of Orlando, FL, Matthew Ryan Ruiz, Brantley Knox and Olivia Marie of Flowery Branch, GA, Brianna Marie Ruiz and Rachel Lauren Ruiz of Tinton Falls, and his predeceased granddaughter, Hannah Marie. He taught them by example the importance of family, character, integrity and love.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday Aug. 1 at Woolley-Boglioli Funeral Home, 10 Morrell St., Long Branch. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 2 at Star of the Sea R.C. Church, Long Branch. Interment will follow at Woodbine Cemetery, Oceanport.
