Obituary for Joseph Henry McGarvey, III

Joseph Henry McGarvey III, died on Tuesday, Sept. 18th at Care One in Holmdel, NJ.

Joe was born and raised in Long Branch and lived in Oceanport for 10 years before moving back to Long Branch in 1982. Joe was a graduate of Long Branch High School. He represented his country with pride and was honorably discharged from the US Navy after serving during the Korean War. After the Navy, Joe followed his father and grandfather’s footsteps and became a police officer for the City of Long Branch. He eventually was promoted to detective and was proud to serve the city in which he lived. He later worked for the Monmouth County Office of Weights and Measures.

He was an exempt member of the West End Fire Department, an active member of the Long Branch Elks BPOE #142, the Italian American Memorial Association (IAMA), Long Branch as well as the VFW.

Joe loved to live and enjoyed the many lifetime friendships that he had and took pride in always making new friends. He was an avid fan of Long Branch High School Football, the Police Athletic League boxing program, Monmouth Park and his children and grandchildren. Joe spent many hours keeping up with current events, reading mystery novels and watching old Westerns. An avid baseball and football fan, Joe enjoyed following the Yankees and Giants.

Joe was pre-deceased by his beloved and loving wife Barbara Marks McGarvey; they were married for 53 years when Barbara passed away in 2012.

Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Joseph IV and Megan, two grandchildren who brought him such joy, Rogan and Mikaela McGarvey of Fair Haven, his daughter, Kathleen McGarvey, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation will be Tuesday, Sept. 25, 4:00 pm until the time of his funeral service at 7:30 pm at the Woolley-Boglioli Funeral Home, 10 Morrell Street, Long Branch. In lieu of traditional remembrances, please make contributions to the Long Branch Elks Special Children’s Fund, 150 Garfield Avenue, Long Branch, NJ.
